Royal Wolf fined $52,000 for illegal software
A Royal Wolf Portable Storage, Inc. (Royal Wolf), specialists in shipping containers, have agreed to pay $52,000 dollars to the Business Software Alliance (BSA).
The BSA is the voice of the world's commercial software industry before governments and in the international marketplace. Its members represent one of the fastest growing industries in the world. The BSA educates consumers on software management and copyright protection, cyber security, trade, e-commerce and other Internet-related issues.
After receiving a report, BSA lawyers contacted Royal Wolf who co-operated with BSA and agreed to conduct a self-audit.
The results of the audit showed that Royal Wolf had more copies of Microsoft, Symantec and Network Associates software installed on computers than it was licensed for.
As a result, Royal Wolf agreed to pay the BSA a sum of $52,000 dollars in settlement.
Royal Wolf also agreed to purchase replacement software, strengthen its software management practices and to delete any unlicensed copies of software.
Bob Kruger, Vice President of Enforcement for the BSA said,
"Even well-managed companies may have more software programs installed on their computers than they have licenses to support. Companies should treat software like any other valuable asset. BSA recommends that all organisations adopt strong software management programs that encourage software compliance."
